The Amazon.de return policy 2026 changes mean a shorter window in many categories: from 1 September 2026, Amazon ended its voluntary 30-day return guarantee for a further group of categories, so customers there now get 14 days. The statutory 14-day withdrawal right is unchanged, and clothing, shoes, watches and jewellery keep 30 days. For marketplace sellers, the key points are that merchant-fulfilled sellers must offer at least the same return options as Amazon, and that you can still choose to offer longer returns voluntarily.
Key dates
- 2017: Amazon requires merchant-fulfilled sellers to offer at least the same return options as Amazon.

What changed on 1 September 2026
As reported by GameStar, citing Amazon’s message to sellers posted in the seller forums, Amazon.de ended its voluntary 30-day return guarantee for a further group of categories from 1 September 2026. Customers buying in these categories now have 14 days to return items.
The categories named in the report include:
- Baby, beauty, luxury beauty and drugstore
- Garden, and home and garden
- Pet supplies and luggage
- Food and beverages, and wine
- Furniture
- Mobile electronics and musical instruments
- Tyres
- Business and industrial supplies
The report gives the total as 16 categories. Check the current return settings for your categories in Seller Central rather than relying on any single list, including this one.
What stays at 30 days
Clothing, shoes, watches and jewellery keep the 30-day return window. If you sell in fashion categories on Amazon.de, your customers’ return expectations have not changed.
How the change fits into the bigger picture

Earlier cuts also covered books, software, toys, DIY, kitchen and large appliances.

Statutory rights vs Amazon’s voluntary guarantee
It is important not to confuse two separate things. Consumers in Germany have a statutory 14-day right of withdrawal for distance purchases, which cannot be shortened. Amazon’s 30-day window was a voluntary guarantee on top of that.
What Amazon has changed is its voluntary guarantee. The legal minimum is the same as before. Your listings, Impressum and customer communications must still respect the statutory withdrawal right, whatever return window you offer.
In practice, the statutory right applies whether or not Amazon’s guarantee covers a product. Your job is to make the process clear and consistent: one return period, stated the same way on your listings, your policy page and in customer service replies.
What it means for FBA sellers
If you use FBA, Amazon handles the customer return process for your orders. Check in Seller Central how the shorter window applies to your products in the affected categories, and update any product inserts or website copy that still mention 30 days.
If you also sell the same products on your own website, check that your site’s return wording does not contradict what customers see on Amazon. Consistent wording helps avoid disputes.
If you ship to Amazon.de customers from UK stock through Remote Fulfilment, remember that returns go back to the fulfilment centre the order shipped from. A shorter window does not change that route, but it does mean returns arrive sooner after the sale.
What it means for merchant-fulfilled sellers
Since 2017, Amazon has required merchant-fulfilled sellers to offer at least the same return options as Amazon. The new 14-day window sets the level you must match in the affected categories. You may still offer a longer window voluntarily.
Review your return settings and your own return policy text. If your policy still promises 30 days in a category that has moved to 14, decide whether to keep the longer window as a deliberate choice or update it. Either way, make sure your listings, return labels and customer service replies say the same thing.
Should you offer longer returns voluntarily?
Offering a longer window than Amazon can be a way to stand out, especially for considered purchases such as furniture or musical instruments. It also means accepting more late returns. There is no universal answer, so weigh it against your margins and return history.
- Consider a longer window if your products are high value, your return rate is low and competitors in your category have moved to 14 days.
- Stay at 14 days if your margins are thin, products are easy to damage or resell poorly once opened, or late returns have been a problem.
- Test before you commit on a few ASINs and track the effect on conversion and returns.
Reducing returns in Germany
The best way to manage returns is to prevent avoidable ones. That starts with listings that set the right expectations in clear German.
- Check your German content. Sizes, dimensions, compatibility and materials should be accurate and easy to find, not lost in a machine translation.
- Show unit prices correctly. German pricing rules require a unit price for goods sold by weight or volume, visible at a glance.
- Include clear safety and usage information in German, as GPSR requires. See our GPSR guide for Amazon sellers.
- Review return reasons monthly in Seller Central and fix the listing issues behind them.
- Answer customer questions in German quickly, before a query becomes a return.
Return reasons are one of the most useful signals in an account, and reviewing them is part of our routine Amazon account management. If you sell on Otto or Kaufland too, check each marketplace’s own return rules, as they are set separately from Amazon’s. Frequently asked questions

For many categories it is now 14 days. From 1 September 2026, Amazon ended its voluntary 30-day guarantee for a further group of categories. Clothing, shoes, watches and jewellery keep 30 days.

No. The statutory 14-day withdrawal right is separate from Amazon’s voluntary guarantee and cannot be shortened. Amazon has changed only its own voluntary policy.
Do merchant-fulfilled sellers have to follow Amazon’s return policy?
Since 2017 Amazon has required merchant-fulfilled sellers to offer at least the same return options as Amazon. You can offer a longer window voluntarily, but not less than Amazon’s.
Can I still offer 30-day returns on Amazon.de?
