An Amazon listing optimisation checklist is a step-by-step review of every field on a product detail page (title, bullet points, description or A+ Content, backend search terms, images, variations and reviews) against Amazon’s rules and against what shoppers search for. Use the checklist below to find the gaps that cost you visibility and conversions, on Amazon.co.uk, the EU stores or Amazon.com. Rules quoted here were checked in November 2026.
At a glance
- Title: 200 characters including spaces for most categories, no word more than twice.
- Bullets: your top five features, product facts only, no pricing or shipping details.
- Search terms: limited to 250 bytes, generic words only, no repeats.
- Images: pure white main image, product filling 85% of the frame; Amazon recommends at least six images and one video.
- A+ Content: up to five Basic modules or seven Premium modules per ASIN for Brand Registry brands.
- Reviews: use Request a Review or Amazon Vine; never offer incentives.
What does an optimised Amazon listing need?
An optimised Amazon listing does two jobs. It gets indexed for the searches your buyers actually type, and it convinces the shopper who lands on it to add to basket. Every field contributes to one or both, so a weak field anywhere on the page costs you either rankings or sales.
Start with keyword research for each marketplace and language, then work through the title, bullets, A+ Content, search terms, images, variations and reviews in that order.
How long can an Amazon product title be?
Amazon’s product title requirements, announced to sellers with an effective date of 21 January 2025, say titles may not exceed 200 characters including spaces for most product categories. Titles also may not repeat the same word more than twice (prepositions, articles and conjunctions excepted) and may not use certain special characters unless they are part of the brand name.
The Amazon announcement on title requirements lists the characters that are not allowed: ! $ ? _ { } ^ ¬ ¦. Some categories have their own style guides, so check the category template before you finalise.
Title checklist
- Brand name first, then the core product phrase a shopper would search.
- Key differentiators next: size, quantity, material, model or compatibility.
- No promotional words such as “sale”, “free delivery” or “best seller”.
- Readable on a phone: put the most important words at the start, because long titles can be shortened on small screens.
- Written natively for each store. A translated UK title rarely matches how German or French shoppers search.
How should you write Amazon bullet points?
Bullet points should highlight the five product features a shopper most needs to decide, in plain, factual language. Amazon’s guidance to sellers says to focus solely on product information, to leave out company details and promotional content, and not to mention pricing, shipping or company information. Lead each bullet with the benefit, then back it with the specific feature.
Amazon staff guidance in the Seller Forums post on bullet points also recommends starting each bullet with a capital, using numerals rather than spelled-out numbers and avoiding end punctuation and symbols such as exclamation marks.
- One idea per bullet. Order them by what buyers ask most, often from your reviews and customer questions.
- Answer the objections that cause returns: dimensions, compatibility, what is in the box, care instructions.
- No claims you cannot support, such as “guaranteed” results or unverified certifications.
What are the rules for backend search terms?
Backend search terms are hidden keywords that help Amazon index your product for searches your visible copy does not cover. In Amazon’s own seller guidance, length is limited to 250 bytes, the field should hold only generic words that improve discoverability, and words should not repeat. Brand names and stop words are unnecessary.
Bytes are not the same as characters. Plain English letters take one byte each, but accented characters such as ä, ö, é or ß take more, so German and French search terms reach the limit sooner. The Amazon Seller Forums tip on search terms also says to separate words with spaces and skip punctuation.
- Add synonyms, alternative spellings and use cases you could not fit in the title or bullets.
- Leave out competitor brand names and ASINs.
- Fill the field per marketplace in that store’s language.
Which listing fields matter most, and what are the limits?
The table below summarises the main listing fields, the rule Amazon publishes for each, and what to check before you publish. Category style guides can be stricter, so always confirm the template for your product type in Seller Central before you upload.
| Field | Amazon rule (checked November 2026) | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Title | 200 characters including spaces for most categories; no word more than twice | Brand, core phrase, key attributes, no banned characters |
| Bullet points | Top five features; no pricing, shipping or company information | Benefit-led, factual, answers return reasons |
| Backend search terms | Limited to 250 bytes; no repeated words | Synonyms and use cases not already on the page |
| Images | Main image on pure white, product filling 85% of the frame | At least six images plus a video, as Amazon recommends |
| A+ Content | Up to five Basic or seven Premium modules per ASIN | Mobile readability, no prices or competitor comparisons |
| Reviews | No incentives in exchange for reviews | Request a Review, Amazon Vine for eligible products |
How do A+ Content and the description help conversion?
A+ Content replaces the plain product description with images, comparison charts and branded modules. It is free for Professional sellers with a brand enrolled in Amazon Brand Registry. Amazon says, citing its internal data, that Basic A+ Content can increase sales by up to 8% and well-implemented Premium A+ Content by up to 20%. These are upper limits.
According to Amazon’s A+ Content design guide, you can use up to five Basic modules or seven Premium modules per ASIN. Do not include pricing, promotions, shipping details, warranty claims, links or comparisons with competitors. Use the comparison chart to cross-sell your own range.
Without Brand Registry, write a clear description covering use, specification and what is in the box.
What should you check on images and variations?
Images are often the first thing a shopper judges. The main image must be on a pure white background with the product filling most of the frame and no added text, logos or props. Secondary images should show scale, features, the product in use and what is included. Variations should group genuine size or colour options under one parent.
Our guide to Amazon product image rules and design covers every image slot, infographics and A+ module design in detail.
Variation checklist
- Use only the variation themes your category allows, such as size, colour or pack size.
- Keep only genuine versions of the same product in one family. Do not group different products under one parent to share reviews.
- Give each child its own correct image, title attributes and price.
How do you get reviews and stay compliant?
Reviews build trust and are protected by strict rules. Amazon has a zero-tolerance policy on review manipulation: you must not offer discounts, free products, refunds or other compensation in exchange for a review. The compliant routes are the Request a Review button in Seller Central and, for eligible brand products, Amazon Vine.
Amazon’s product reviews policy summary also bans review clubs and posting reviews of your own or competitors’ products. Vine is open to products with fewer than 30 reviews, fulfilled by Amazon, under a Brand Registry brand.
Compliance goes beyond reviews. EU listings need product safety data under GPSR (see our GPSR guide for Amazon sellers), and selling in Germany needs a LUCID packaging registration.
How do you test listing changes?
Brand owners can test titles, images, bullet points, descriptions and A+ Content with Manage Your Experiments. Amazon recommends running experiments for 8 to 10 weeks to reach statistically significant results. Change one major element at a time, so you know which change moved conversion.
Read Amazon’s Manage Your Experiments page for eligibility. For the ads side, our Amazon PPC audit checklist shows how to feed converting search terms back into your listings.

Frequently asked questions
What is the character limit for an Amazon product title?
For most product categories, Amazon titles may not exceed 200 characters including spaces. Some categories have their own style guide, so check your category template in Seller Central.
How many bytes can Amazon backend search terms be?
Amazon limits the search terms field to 250 bytes. Accented characters use more than one byte, so German or French terms fill the field faster than plain English.
Do I need Brand Registry to optimise my Amazon listing?
No. You can optimise titles, bullets, descriptions, search terms and images without it. You need Brand Registry for A+ Content, Brand Story and Manage Your Experiments.
Can I offer a discount in exchange for an Amazon review?
No. Amazon prohibits offering discounts, free products, refunds or other compensation in exchange for reviews. Use the Request a Review button or Amazon Vine for eligible products.
How often should I update an Amazon listing?
Review it whenever search term data, reviews or returns show a gap, and test major changes one at a time with Manage Your Experiments if you are brand registered.
