Amazon product image requirements are the rules every listing photo must meet: the main image needs a pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255), the product must fill about 85% of the frame, and there must be no text, logos, watermarks or props. Secondary images, infographics, lifestyle shots, A+ modules and video give you more creative room. This guide covers the rules, as checked on Amazon’s own pages in November 2026, and how to design images that sell on a phone screen.
At a glance
- Main image: pure white background, product fills 85% of the image, no text, logos, borders or props.
- File size: 500 to 10,000 pixels on the longest side; over 1,000 pixels is preferred so zoom works.
- Formats: JPEG (preferred), TIFF, PNG or non-animated GIF.
- How many: Amazon recommends at least six images and one video.
- A+ Content: up to five Basic or seven Premium modules per ASIN, images no larger than 2MB.
What are Amazon’s main image requirements?
The main image is the photo shown in search results, so Amazon applies its strictest rules here. It must have a pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255), the product must occupy 85% of the image, and it must not contain text, logos, borders, watermarks, graphics, props or accessories that are not included in the purchase.
These rules are set out in Amazon’s own guidance on uploading images in the Seller Forums. Some categories, such as clothing, add their own rules, so check the style guide for your category.
Main image checklist
- True white background, not off-white or light grey. Check the corner pixels in your editing software.
- Product fills the frame, with no large empty margins.
- Only what the buyer receives. If accessories are sold separately, leave them out.
- No “new”, “best seller”, badges, packaging claims overlaid or brand logos added in editing.
- Sharp, evenly lit and colour accurate, so the product matches what arrives.
What are the technical file requirements?
Amazon accepts images that are 500 to 10,000 pixels on their longest side, in JPEG, TIFF, PNG or non-animated GIF format, and clear with no pixelation or jagged edges. Amazon prefers images larger than 1,000 pixels on the longest side, so shoppers can zoom, and prefers the JPEG format. Following those preferences avoids most technical upload problems.
Amazon staff summarised these requirements in the Listings Lounge post on product image requirements. In practice, export well above the 1,000-pixel preference so images stay sharp when zoomed and on high-density phone screens.
| Image type | Amazon rule (checked November 2026) | Design goal |
|---|---|---|
| Main image | Pure white background, product fills 85%, no text, logos, borders or props | Win the click in search results |
| Secondary images | More flexibility than the main image; same technical file rules | Answer questions and objections |
| Infographics | Allowed as secondary images | Show features, size and what is in the box |
| Lifestyle images | Allowed as secondary images | Show the product in use and at scale |
| A+ Content | Up to five Basic or seven Premium modules per ASIN; images no larger than 2MB | Brand, comparison and cross-selling |
| Video | Amazon recommends at least one video; Premium A+ supports 720p video | Demonstrate use and quality |
What should secondary images show?
Secondary images are where you sell. Amazon gives them more flexibility than the main image, so you can add text, graphics, other backgrounds and people. Use the six or more slots Amazon recommends to answer the questions shoppers ask: how big is it, what is it made of, how is it used, what is in the box and why choose it.
A typical sequence that works for most products:
- Main image on white.
- Key benefits infographic: three or four headline features with icons.
- Dimensions and scale, ideally next to a familiar object or a person.
- Lifestyle image showing the product in real use.
- Detail or material close-up.
- What is in the box.
- Comparison across your own range, or care and usage instructions.
How do you design infographics and lifestyle images?
An infographic is a secondary image that combines the product with short text, icons or callouts to explain features at a glance. A lifestyle image shows the product being used by the target customer. Both should be designed for a phone first: large type, few words, high contrast and one message per image, for small screens.
Infographic rules of thumb
- Use no more than a short headline and three or four callouts per image.
- Keep text large enough to read without zooming on a phone.
- Only state claims you can prove, such as certifications you actually hold.
- Localise text for each marketplace. German shoppers on Amazon.de expect German, not English.
- Keep fonts, colours and icon style consistent so the gallery looks like one brand.
Lifestyle image rules of thumb
- Show the buyer’s real situation, not a generic stock scene.
- Make scale obvious, with hands, people or furniture.
- Keep the product the hero: in focus, well lit and clearly visible.
What are the rules for A+ Content and Premium A+?
A+ Content adds branded images, text and comparison charts below the bullet points. It is free for Professional sellers with a brand in Amazon Brand Registry. Amazon’s design guide allows up to five Basic modules or seven Premium modules per ASIN, with images no larger than 2MB. Premium A+ adds larger images, video, hotspots and carousels for brands that meet Amazon’s criteria.
Amazon’s A+ Content design guide lists what is not allowed: pricing, promotional or shipping details, QR codes, hyperlinks, contact information, warranty or guarantee information in text placements, and comparisons with competitors. Claims such as “best-selling” or “top-rated” are also out.
- Design A+ modules mobile-first. Amazon advises avoiding text embedded in images so mobile shoppers can read the details, so put key text in the module’s text fields.
- Use the preview in the A+ Content tool to check desktop and mobile layouts before you submit.
- Do not resize images after export. Amazon warns resized images can look blurry with unreadable text.
- Add a Brand Story to tell shoppers who is behind the product and send traffic to your Brand Store.
Amazon’s A+ Content page says, citing internal data, that Basic A+ can increase sales by up to 8% and well-implemented Premium A+ by up to 20%. Treat those as upper limits, not forecasts.
Why are Amazon images rejected or suppressed?
Most image problems come from breaking the main image rules. The usual causes are a background that is not pure white, text, logos or badges added to the main image, props that are not included in the sale, and images too small or low in quality to meet the technical requirements.
- Off-white background: re-cut the product and set the background to RGB 255, 255, 255.
- Text or graphics on the main image: move them to secondary images.
- Accessories not included: remove them or make clear in secondary images that they are not part of the sale.
- Too small or blurry: re-export at a higher resolution from the original file.
- Wrong product shown: make sure each variation has its own correct image.
