OTTO Market seller requirements: who can sell on Otto.de

OTTO Market seller requirements come down to four things: an eligible company in Germany or one of the approved EU countries, its own VAT ID (with OSS for non-German sellers), German-language customer service and stock that ships from a warehouse in the EU. OTTO then reviews every application by hand, so preparation matters as much as meeting the rules.

At a glance

  • What OTTO Market is: the programme that lets third-party sellers list products on otto.de, which serves customers in Germany.
  • Who can apply: companies from Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Austria and France, with a Danish pilot for selected partners from November 2026.
  • Who cannot: small businesses under §19 UStG, tax groups that share one VAT ID, and sellers shipping from outside the EU.
  • Service rules: customer service in German, tracking on every parcel and a 30-day customer return period.
  • Checks: manual review, then an OTTO Payments legitimation check that can take up to 15 working days.
  • Checked: November 2026 on otto.market. Rules change, so confirm before you apply.

What is OTTO Market?

OTTO Market is the seller programme behind otto.de, the German online shop run by OTTO. Approved third-party sellers list products alongside OTTO’s own range and pay a monthly base fee plus commission. OTTO checks every applicant before connecting them, so you are applying for a place rather than simply opening an account.

OTTO’s official seller site says it has more than 13 million active customers. For fees and advertising, read our guide on how to sell on OTTO.

Which companies can sell on OTTO?

You need a company, not a sole trader, with its seat in Germany or another approved country, an accepted legal form and its own VAT ID from that country. Companies from approved countries outside Germany must also take part in the EU One-Stop-Shop (OSS) VAT scheme using their home VAT ID.

Country Accepted legal forms (as published) Extra condition
Germany AG, GmbH, KG, OHG, SE, UG (haftungsbeschränkt) German VAT ID
Netherlands B.V., N.V., V.O.F. Dutch VAT ID and OSS
Poland Sp. z o.o., S.A., Sp. j. Polish VAT ID and OSS
Austria AG, GmbH, OG Austrian VAT ID and OSS
France EURL, SA, SARL, SARLU, SAS, SASU, SNC French VAT ID and OSS
Denmark (pilot) A/S, ApS, I/S Danish VAT ID and OSS, selected partners only

Who is excluded

  • Small businesses under the Kleinunternehmer scheme (§19 UStG), and any legal form not on OTTO’s list.
  • Tax groups (Organschaften) that share one VAT ID. OTTO says these cannot be connected.

What about UK and non-EU brands?

We found no published route for non-EU companies, so a UK brand would normally sell through an entity in an approved country. OTTO’s FAQ and homepage list slightly different country sets, so confirm with OTTO and take tax advice first.

What customer service, shipping and returns rules apply?

OTTO requires German-language customer service, dispatch from a warehouse in Germany or the EU, tracking on every shipment and returns to an accepted warehouse. Customers can return delivered orders within 30 days, and OTTO generates the return label from your return tracking number and return address.

  • Dispatch: from Germany or elsewhere in the EU. OTTO’s FAQ says shipments from outside the EU are not accepted.
  • Carriers: DHL, DHL Express, GLS, Hermes, UPS and DPD for parcels. Freight can use any forwarder. Letter post is not possible.
  • Tracking: OTTO says tracking must always be guaranteed, with an outbound and a return tracking number for each parcel order.
  • Return warehouses: Germany, Denmark, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Spain or the Czech Republic.
  • Return carriers: DHL, GLS or Hermes to Germany. Returns elsewhere in the EU must use DHL eCommerce, and OTTO says a standard DHL contract is not enough.

What documents and declarations does OTTO ask for?

OTTO asks for full company data, details of the applicant, legal representatives and beneficial owners, a SEPA business bank account and several compliance declarations. It checks company data against Germany’s Federal Central Tax Office (BZSt), and OTTO Payments runs a separate identity and credit check before you can sell.

  • Company: full name with legal form, business address and further details depending on the legal form.
  • People: the applicant, the statutory representatives and any beneficial owner above 25%. Holders of Prokura do not count as legal representatives.
  • Bank: a business account in the SEPA area.
  • Electrical goods: WEEE take-back obligations under §17 ElektroG and your WEEE registration number.
  • Packaging: system participation under §7 VerpackG and ZSVR registration under §9. Our guide to LUCID registration and the packaging law explains the steps.
  • Other: any FSC certification number, the seller terms and OTTO’s Business Partner Declaration on Sustainability.

What product rules and product data does OTTO expect?

Your range must fit OTTO’s open product ranges and avoid its banned products, and each listing needs complete German product data mapped to OTTO’s own categories and brands. Each OTTO category defines which attributes are obligatory and which are optional, so plan your data per category before you upload.

Product rules

  • Ranges include drugstore, electronics, fashion, furniture and living, garden and DIY, health, non-perishable food and sports. The FAQ says not every range is open yet.
  • Banned across all groups: sandblasted textiles, PVC in packaging and textiles, real fur and fluorescent tubes. The FAQ also lists Uzbek cotton, angora wool and mohair.
  • Leather, feathers and down, wool and wood carry extra requirements.

Product data

  • Add products in the Partner Portal’s product module or through the OTTO Market API.
  • The OTTO Market API documentation says brands should match OTTO’s brand list, and an existing OTTO product ID (MOIN) should be included where the product is already sold on otto.de.
  • Write in German, using the terms German shoppers search for. See our post on OTTO listing optimisation and ranking.

What are the onboarding steps after you apply?

After approval you get Partner Portal access, set up two-factor authentication, accept the contracts, pass the OTTO Payments check, add company and logistics details, then load products and go live. OTTO publishes no approval time, but says the payments check can take up to 15 working days.

  1. Apply through the online form. OTTO reviews each application individually.
  2. Log in to OTTO Partner Connect and set up mandatory two-factor authentication with an app such as Google Authenticator.
  3. Accept the contracts with Otto GmbH & Co. KGaA and OTTO Payments, after checking your company name and VAT ID.
  4. Pass the legitimation check. A legal representative identifies themselves with a camera device and valid ID. The monthly base fee starts once this succeeds.
  5. Set up logistics: carriers, shipping costs and at least one shipping profile with processing time, cut-off time and transit time.
  6. Load products and test. OTTO recommends a test order, then you click “Jetzt mit dem Verkauf starten” (start selling now).

What usually blocks approval on OTTO?

OTTO does not publish a list of rejection reasons. Based on its published rules, check these first: legal form and VAT set-up, OSS registration, stock and returns locations, German-speaking service, compliance registrations, and whether a legal representative can complete identification. Each is a stated condition you can fix before applying.

Blocker Rule it breaks Fix before applying
Sole trader or Kleinunternehmer Excluded legal form Sell through an accepted company form
Shared VAT ID in a tax group Organschaften cannot be connected Use an entity with its own VAT ID
No OSS (non-German sellers) OSS is a stated condition Register for OSS with your home VAT ID
Stock or returns outside accepted countries Dispatch and returns rules Use an EU 3PL and an accepted return address
No German customer service Stated requirement Hire or contract German-speaking support
Missing WEEE or ZSVR registration Declared at registration Register before you apply
No representative available for ID Prokura holders do not count Plan the identification with a director

How EcommTech helps

EcommTech’s OTTO onboarding service prepares the application, compliance declarations, logistics set-up and German product data, then hands over to day-to-day OTTO marketplace management.

  • An OTTO account we manage shipped €20,410,578 in revenue on otto.de between January 2024 and November 2026. Read the OTTO case study.
  • We built MarktRank, a rank tracker for OTTO sellers, to follow keyword positions after launch.
  • An Upwork client rated our Channable sync across Kaufland, OTTO and Allegro 5.0/5 (November 2025): one catalogue publishing to all three, with stock and prices in sync.

We work through OTTO’s own user permissions, never shared passwords.

Frequently asked questions

Can a sole trader sell on OTTO Market?

No. OTTO only accepts the company legal forms it lists for each approved country, and it says all other legal forms, including small businesses under §19 UStG, are excluded from selling on the marketplace.

Can a UK company sell on otto.de?

We found no published route for UK or other non-EU companies. OTTO requires an approved EU legal form and an EU VAT ID, so a UK brand would normally need an entity in an approved country. Confirm with OTTO and take tax advice first.

Do I need a German warehouse to sell on OTTO?

No. Goods can ship from a warehouse in Germany or elsewhere in the EU. Returns must go to a warehouse in Germany or one of the listed EU countries, using DHL eCommerce for returns outside Germany.

How long does OTTO take to approve sellers?

OTTO publishes no fixed approval time and reviews each application individually. After approval, its registration guide says the OTTO Payments legitimation check can take up to 15 working days.
